Remembering the 18th Sultan of Sokoto, Late Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki
By Bello Shehu Shuni
“Everyone shall taste death
Then to us you shall be returned
Chapter 29-Al-Ankabut verse 57”
Death has no calendar, no negotiations, no excuse, neither waits for the young to grow nor the old to choose a convenient time for departure. Death is God’s last gift to the living.
Some of the strangest things about death are that it doesn’t consider wealth or status of its victims, rich or poor, beggar or king, peasant or president, no matter how powerful or weak, death does not mind. In fact, it does not consider whether one is eating, playing, reading, worshiping or committing a crime, once one’s time is up, it wouldn’t add a single second more for that soul. Death usually comes at a time that it is not expected.
On the 14th of November 2016 Nigeria lost one of it’s pillars, a religious leader, diplomat and man of many details, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki. The 18th Sultan of Sokoto’s contributions towards the development of Islam and Nigeria is beyond measure. He made the Nigeria local government administration unified through the Dasuki Local Government Reform Report. He contributed towards Nigeria to become a member of the organization of Islamic countries (OIC), the completion of Sultan Abubakar Central Jumat mosque in Sokoto and the Jama’atu Nasarul Islam headquarters in Kaduna. The other contributions were in the development of the National Mosque in Abuja and the Mashood Abiola central Mosque, Ijebu Ode; the upgrading of Sokoto orphanage homeage and introduction of salary allowances for chief imams and deputies of the Jumat mosques in Sokoto State and the compilation of the Islamic literatures and logical works by the founding fathers of Sokoto caliphate and disciples. The revered Islamic leader also made Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto to be the center for organizing Quranic recitation and memorization nationwide and good representation of Nigeria in any Quranic recitation competition in the global fora. Today is two years since you departed the world.
To keep the memories of Late Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki alive, appropriate authorities should make efforts to immortalize him because he spent most of his productive years serving his fatherland. It is commendable that Sokoto State government should name the Sokoto State university after him and the Jama’tul Nasrul Islam Headquarters to be named after his name. The federal government should immortalize him by naming one of her agencies after him.
His good deeds are unmatched and worthy of emulations.
With my two hands raised, I pray for you and the family you left behind. May Allah the all-powerful, most merciful, ever-forgiving and all knowing creator and judge of everything in existence make his grave garden among the best gardens of paradise.
